Free Summer Reading Programs for Kids

Summer reading programs are a great way to keep your kids excited about reading over the summer. Here are five fun programs that are available this summer.

Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble’s Summer Reading Program has been a favorite of ours for years. Kids in first through sixth grades read eight books then turn the record in to their local Barnes& Noble store to earn a free book (there are several to chooses from in each grade level).

Pottery Barn Kids

The Summer Reading Challenge at Pottery Barn Kids challenges children under 10 to read a list of specific books over the summer months. There are two lists: one for independent readers and one for early readers.

When the books on the list are read, children can turn in their progress poster at a Pottery Barn Kids store for a free book. This promotion runs from May 17 to August 22 (while supplies last). The free book must be redeemed by August 31.

Scholastic Books

The Scholastic Summer Challenge, in partnership with PBS Kids and iVillage, involves registering your child on the Scholastic website, where they can record their reading to win chances at prizes. Parents can also receive daily emails from iVillage that offer literacy support.

Half Price Books

With Half Price Books’ Feed Your Brain Summer Reading Program, kids 14 and under read 15 minutes per day for a month to earn a $5 Half Price Books Bonus Bucks Coupon. The coupons are valid from July 25 through August 31, 2012.

TD Bank

With the TD Bank Summer Reading Program, kids who read ten books and fill out the Summer Reading Form will get $10 deposited into a new or existing Young Saver Account. The program runs through September 29, 2012.
